Parliament Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that those who cover up or fail to report child sexual abuse could face professional or criminal sanctions under a new offence to be introduced this year.
Cooper emphasized that the change, added to the Crime and Policing Bill, aims to ensure that mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse becomes a legal obligation for individuals in regulated positions.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp called for a national statutory public inquiry into sexual abuse, asserting that the current Independent Inquiry has not fully addressed the grooming gang issue.
Philp argued that to uncover the truth about child sexual abuse, the government should grant an inquiry the power to compel witnesses to testify and provide evidence under oath.
