Labour's Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh emphasized the importance of the fund, stating, "With families gathering to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, it's important to remember those in our communities who may be going hungry this festive period."
Charlotte Hill and Kris Gibbon-Walsh, chief executives of The Felix Project and FareShare, expressed their excitement about the fund, saying they were "thrilled" it had come to fruition after years of campaigning.
The government estimates that around 330,000 tonnes of edible food a year are wasted or used for animal feed, highlighting the urgent need for food redistribution.
The scheme aims to address food waste by funding new equipment and technology for charities, enabling them to deliver surplus farm food to those in need.
