The UK government aims to deport foreign criminals immediately after they receive custodial sentences. This policy, announced by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, seeks to free up prison space and could save taxpayers an average of £54,000 annually per prison place. With nearly 5,200 foreign national offenders deported since July 2024, the new law will apply to those serving fixed-term sentences. Authorities will maintain the discretion to keep criminal offenders in custody if they pose threats to national security or public safety.
Shabana Mahmood stated, 'If you abuse our hospitality and break our laws, we will send you packing.' Deportations are up under this government.
The proposed law change could save taxpayers an average of £54,000 per year, per prison place, applying to prisoners serving fixed-term determinate sentences.
Almost 5,200 foreign national offenders have been deported since July 2024, marking a 14 percent increase from the previous 12 months.
Authorities retain the power not to deport an offender but to keep them in custody if they plan further crimes against the UK’s interests.
