There's a dark side': 1500m star Georgia Hunter Bell calls for online abuse to stop
Briefly

Georgia Hunter Bell, the bronze medallist in the 1500m at the Olympics, has decided to avoid social media before her races due to its darker aspects. This decision follows recent incidents of severe body shaming directed at fellow athlete Eilish McColgan. Despite experiencing a rise in public support, Bell has also faced greater scrutiny and hostility online. She called for improved measures to combat harassment, acknowledging the mental toll it takes on athletes, as they must focus on their performances while navigating negative comments.
It's hard when they're directed to you. Sometimes I'll have people direct messaging me things and it is something that does need to stop.
The majority of people are really supportive but there is a really dark side of social media where people write things about you.
Abuse is definitely something that needs to stop. I try to just see it as a compliment almost.
I might do a post in the morning if I've got a race and then I won't go on social media all day.
