NASA and the European Space Agency have concluded that asteroid 2024 YR4 poses no significant threat to Earth after two months of study. Initially, there was a 3% risk of impact in 2032, but the ESA has now reduced this to 0.001%, while NASA estimates it at 0.0027%. Conversely, there is still a 1.7% chance of collision with the Moon on December 22, 2032. The asteroid, which could be up to 300ft in diameter, will be continuously monitored as it orbits near Earth every four years.
NASA and the European Space Agency have virtually ruled out any threat from the asteroid 2024 YR4, once considered a potential risk for Earth.
Despite the significant reduction in danger for Earth, there remains a 1.7% chance that 2024 YR4 could strike the Moon on December 22, 2032.
