More than three decades after a woman was raped at Watford General Hospital, police are revitalizing efforts to apprehend the long-sought suspect. The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit is employing familial DNA searching to find potential relatives of the rapist, who remains unidentified despite a DNA sample taken at the time. The victim was a student nurse threatened with a knife during the assault. Authorities urge anyone with knowledge of the crime or who lived near the hospital in April 1991 to come forward with information.
We never give up on cases like these, and we're now trying a new approach known as familial searching. This might lead us to the offender.
A sample of DNA was taken from the crime scene in 1991, but to date we have not found an exact match on the national DNA Database.
