Most Britons do not know scale of UK's involvement in slavery, survey finds
Briefly

A recent survey has revealed a significant gap in the British public's understanding of the country's involvement in slavery and colonialism. Conducted in preparation for the UN International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery, the poll found that 85% of respondents were ignorant of the fact that over 3 million Africans were forcibly transported to the Caribbean. A staggering 89% did not know that British merchants enslaved individuals for more than 300 years, while 75% were unaware that UK taxpayers continued to pay off a compensation loan to enslavers until 2000. Despite this ignorance, support for reparations is growing, with 63% backing a formal apology and 40% supporting financial reparations for Caribbean nations and descendants of enslaved people.
