PC Ian Brotherton, a Metropolitan Police officer, received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving. Driving at 47 mph in a 30 mph zone, he struck moped rider Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes while responding to an emergency call on 12 October 2023. Despite showing remorse, Judge Mark Lucraft KC emphasized that his conduct as a trained police driver must meet higher standards. Guedes' family condemned the officer's actions, demanding appropriate accountability for the loss of their loved one.
As a trained police driver driving in connection with your duties your driving must be judged according to those standards.
PC Ian Brotherton was a police response driver and had undertaken training, which included how to safely approach and negotiate traffic lights showing red when engaged on an emergency call.
Brotherton was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and disqualified from driving for 30 months.
Mr Guedes' family described him as a 'joy', 'irreplaceable' and a talented footballer, calling for the officer to be dismissed.
