"There was a lot of chaos. He [the accused] was normal considering people were shouting and screaming and putting a lot of attention in his direction. It was like he was vacant and just going about his day. I remember thinking he didn't seem to be of sound mind, as if he was on drugs."
"A man has told a court how he tried to save a woman who was stabbed 18 times in a 'senseless attack' as she waited for a bus in north London."
"Debella is too unwell to attend the hearing, the jury was told, and they must instead determine whether he committed the acts alleged against him in what is known as a 'trial of issue'."
A 22-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 66-year-old woman 18 times on Edgware Road shortly before midday, and she died at the scene despite bystander and emergency attempts to save her. The accused had received a hunting knife by post about an hour before the attack and had been living in a residential home for people with mental health problems. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes and said the accused appeared vacant and was 'sauntering away' after the attack. The accused is too unwell to attend the hearing, so the jury must decide the facts in a trial of issue.
