The UK government, responding to the Covid-19 Inquiry's findings, will conduct a comprehensive pandemic preparedness exercise in the autumn, involving thousands of personnel. This initiative aims to address the UK's previous shortcomings in handling the pandemic, deemed "ill-prepared" by Baroness Hallett. Alongside this, the government plans to enhance its emergency alert system and create a 'vulnerability map' to identify at-risk populations for better local support. Training for 4,000 crisis management individuals annually will also commence through a new UK resilience academy, focusing on effective pandemic response.
We must learn lessons from the Covid pandemic, as we cannot afford to make the same mistakes again. But we will plan in a way that reflects new realities.
The UK was 'ill-prepared' for the coronavirus pandemic, and 'failed' its citizens, as stated by the chair of the inquiry, Baroness Hallett.
