This proactive approach aimed to prevent the spread of misinformation, particularly given the recent history of misinformation fueling riots in the UK. Liverpool's mayor, Steve Rotheram, commended the police's efforts to calm speculation around the suspect's identity and reduce potential hatred stirred by misinformation from far-right groups, bringing attention to the serious implications of misinformation in society.
The police, with their messaging, were able to stem and to dampen down some of that wild speculation, while acknowledging nefarious groups that are only interested in stirring up hatred.
Following the Southport attack in July, where misinformation led to riots, Merseyside Police acted swiftly to share details of an arrested suspect to counter speculation.
