Nicoleta and Nicon Popescu, a couple involved in a violent robbery at a Sainsbury's store, were sentenced to prison. They entered the store on September 1, 2022, and with a third accomplice, threatened shop staff with a knife and tools while stealing cigarettes worth thousands of pounds. The couple, who both faced personal challenges including addiction and homelessness, were captured a month later with theft tools. The judge noted the traumatic effect their crime had on the community.
Judge Martyn Barklem described the Sainsbury's burglary as a cold-blooded incident which no doubt traumatised shoppers and staff.
Nicon Popescu had come to the country seven years ago as an economic migrant... However, he later became addicted to heroin causing him to lose his job, home and friends.
Nicoleta Popescu recently become homeless following strained relations with her family due to her cannabis and crack cocaine use.
