A leading think tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), has warned that up to 25,000 UK automotive jobs could be jeopardized due to potential US tariffs on vehicle imports. Key manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover and BMW's Mini plant would face the brunt of these 25 percent tariffs proposed by the US. With one in eight UK cars exported to the US, the tariffs will pose significant challenges for the automotive sector. The IPPR calls for a push towards electric vehicle production and investment in sustainable transportation to mitigate risks.
As one door closes, another opens. There is huge untapped potential in manufacturing green planes, trains, and automobiles and selling them at home and abroad.
The IPPR has warned that such punitive levies could present an "extraordinary challenge" for the already fragile sector.
Vehicle production and transport equipment currently account for a third of Britain's manufacturing exports to the US.
The think tank urges government and industry to intensify efforts to transition to electric vehicle production, mitigating long-term risks.
