Thousands of tenants could be kicked out of their homes before new laws to ban no-fault evictions come into effect, a campaign group has warned. The Renters Reform Coalition revealed that based on current trends, over 15,600 rental households might face eviction by bailiffs in the first six months of 2025. This alarming statistic represents a 12.2 percent increase from the first half of last year, indicating that tenants are vulnerable while waiting for legislative change.
The new legislation promises more rights for tenants to contest unfair rent increases, target negligent landlords, and prevent the issuing of section 21 orders. These orders allow landlords to evict tenants without specifying a reason. However, the timing of the law's implementation has raised concerns among tenant advocates who fear a surge in evictions before the bill can provide necessary protections.
