Alderwood, the renowned Michelin-recognized restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz, has closed its doors after a tumultuous history marked by both success and controversy. Despite its popularity and commitment to local, sustainable cuisine, the restaurant faced significant challenges including staff resignations following a violent incident in 2020 and the unexpected departure of its founding executive chef. Although it attempted a revival under new leadership, the restaurant ultimately decided to close after a brief message on social media, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of its closure and the memories shared within its walls.
However, the restaurant also saw its share of troubles. Notably, an altercation in 2020 resulted in the firing of chef Paul Suniga. Much of Alderwood's staff resigned in protest.
Alderwood was the only Santa Cruz restaurant that boasted recognition in the Michelin Guide. 'Thanks to its promise of serving delicious cuisine with local and sustainably sourced ingredients...'
The restaurant added a more casual second spot called Alderwood Pacific in early 2023, though it would close later that year.
It is bittersweet to say goodbye to this chapter filled with unforgettable moments and shared experiences.
