Westminster Residence, designed by Batay-Csorba Architects, modernizes the traditional gabled architecture of Toronto's High Park neighborhood. The asymmetrical design features a striking terracotta roof hovering over a dark brick body, creating both familiarity and tension. The project showcases various materials like dark walnut and travertine paired with light oak and lime-washed walls to balance weight and lightness, while exposure to the elements is thoughtfully accounted for. This informal tension complements the unique forms of the dormers, which interplay with the overall structure, fostering a dynamic relationship with the surrounding landscape.
"The simple project form is a composition of three dark monolithic figures, a low dark brick-clad volume, a heavy triangular stone-clad roof, and tall rectilinear dormers."
"This material tension mirrors the formal tension between the asymmetrically balanced volumes - a heavy triangular stone roof that appears to float above the brick base, and dormers that simultaneously ground and hover."
