After years of being overshadowed by Friends, the spin-off 'Joey' starring Matt LeBlanc is now available for streaming on the Friends YouTube channel, with its first two episodes released on March 11. Originally aired from 2004 to 2006, 'Joey' followed the beloved character as he pursued acting in Hollywood but struggled to achieve the same success. Despite high expectations and fan support, the show failed to maintain strong ratings, leading to its cancellation after two seasons. Reexamining the series, co-creator Kevin S. Bright acknowledged that the character's portrayal diverged from what made him endearing in Friends, contributing to the show's downfall.
"On Friends, Joey was a womanizer but we enjoyed his exploits... Joey was deconstructed to be a goofy, reckless character, which didn’t resonate with the audience."
"The final episode of Friends aired on May 6, 2004, but one cast member, Matt LeBlanc, chose to not say goodbye and created a spin-off called Joey."
