Why experts say work on these 5 fronts is needed to tackle Toronto's congestion crisis | CBC News
Briefly

Toronto faces significant congestion issues exacerbated by a growing number of vehicles on its existing roads, which have not expanded since the 1970s. Experts, including engineering professor Baher Abdulhai, emphasize that solutions must come from various fronts, including enhancing public transit options. One key project, the Ontario Line subway, is under construction to improve connectivity. With 1.2 million cars added since 2000, the need for alternatives is more pressing than ever, highlighting the inadequacies of current infrastructure in handling traffic demands.
"You have to do everything," said Baher Abdulhai, an engineering professor at the University of Toronto. "There is no silver-bullet solution." The need is for multiple strategies to tackle Toronto's congestion.
"Building out the system is the critical piece," said Giles Gerson, TRBOT president. "We've known we had to build transit for decades but couldn't quite get around to doing it." It emphasizes the urgent need for expanded public transit.
