"Today and every day, we are making a commitment to purchase the best available technology and to green our fleet as quickly as we can, while maintaining a reliable service," said TTC Board Chair Jamaal Myers at a news conference Friday.
"The TTC's transition toward becoming 100 per cent zero emissions before 2040 is a significant step, with new buses having improved battery capacity and accessibility," said Myers.
Mayor Olivia Chow suggested the province could pitch in with funding to add more battery-electric buses to the fleet or to hire more operators, highlighting community support for the transition.
Once all 340 new battery-electric buses arrive, the TTC will have the largest battery-electric bus fleet in North America, showcasing a major advancement in public transit sustainability.
