In Liberty Village, an increase in coyote attacks on pet dogs has prompted local residents to urge city officials for action. Expert Dennis Murray suggests that these coyotes, having become habituated to human presence, pose a growing threat and should be humanely killed instead of relocated, an option he deems ineffective. He cites the risks of relocation, especially since Ontario laws restrict the movement of wildlife. Murray also links the coyote migration to habitat loss caused by redevelopment around areas like Ontario Place.
"I don't know why the municipality is so adverse to considering the logical solution. There's no other way to stop these problems than just get rid of these animals," Murray said.
"Once they lose those kinds of barriers, we run into coyotes a lot more," Murray said in an interview.
Murray stated that relocation is a 'ridiculous' suggestion that could introduce coyotes into the territory of other coyote populations.
"The hope would be that these new animals have that aversion to humans," Murray said.
