The city councillors justified the increase in water and garbage bills, stating that it is necessary to maintain the essential infrastructure that supports these services.
The new rates, effective January 1, 2025, will raise an average household's water bill by $39, totaling $1,078, while garbage rates will rise by 3.75 percent.
City councillors emphasized that the annual fees for waste removal will also differ based on bin size, highlighting the increase of $11.07 for the small bin.
These rates are interim and subject to change as city council reviews its budget, normally concluding around February.
