Threads challenges X by offering free support for up to 10K characters, plus prominent links | TechCrunch
"After recently being spotted testing a way to share longer text, Threads, Meta's X competitor, is now officially rolling out the feature that allows users to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to their post. The addition has been designed with the needs of creators in mind, as it supports linking out to content outside of Threads, like newsletters, blogs, podcasts, and more."
"However, X in 2023 introduced a way for its paid subscribers to post up to 25,000 characters, in the hopes of encouraging creators to publish their content directly on its platform. Meta, meanwhile, isn't going quite that far. Instead, the company says that the 10,000 characters give people more room to express themselves, but also allows them to promote their work and drive others to "wherever it lives," even if not on Threads itself."
Threads raises its per-post character limit from 500 to 10,000, enabling much longer text attachments and supporting links to external content such as newsletters, blogs, podcasts, and storefronts. The expansion targets creators who want to promote work, drive preorders, or point readers to original sources and purchase pages. Meta observed users sharing long passages via screenshots and threading, and designed the feature to reduce those workarounds. Unlike X, which offered up to 25,000 characters for paid subscribers, Threads delivers the expanded limit for free and currently does not plan to monetize text posts.
