Surge in tech jobs as skills shortage hits 83pc of firms
Briefly

A report indicates that while unemployment remains at a 25-year low, a significant skills shortage is complicating hiring efforts for companies, particularly in the tech sector. Particularly, 55% of IT firms plan to increase hiring, yet 83% of all businesses experience difficulties finding suitable candidates. Jonny Edgar from ManpowerGroup Ireland notes a surge in demand for AI and cybersecurity skills, emphasizing that despite workforce reductions at firms like Meta and TikTok, the tech sector is positioned for sustainable growth.
The tech sector is reporting an appetite for growth like no other. Following the post-pandemic scramble for talent, which resulted in over-hiring and a long stretch of hiring freezes, the sector has now stabilized in a strong position to grow sustainably.
Managing director Jonny Edgar stated that 83% of all businesses are reporting difficulty finding candidates with the right skills, despite unemployment being at a 25-year low.
There has been a sharp increase in appetite for candidates with skills relating to AI, as well as continued demand for specialists in the areas of cyber security, cloud, and data.
Mr Edgar emphasized that while recent workforce reductions at TikTok and Meta are noteworthy, they must be viewed in context to understand the overall hiring landscape.
