Sony has increased its operating profit forecast for the year ending March by 2%, bringing it to JPY 1.34 trillion ($8.70 billion). The gaming division saw profit surge by 37% in the last quarter, fueled by higher sales and improved hardware performance. The company sold 9.5 million PlayStation 5 units during this period, a substantial increase over last year's sales. With new game titles on the way, Sony expects continued success in the gaming sector. Additionally, profits from the music division were bolstered by rising streaming revenue.
Once best known for consumer electronics such as the Walkman, Sony's business spans games, movies, music and image sensors.
Profit at the gaming business grew 37 percent in the October-December quarter, driven by higher sales including from network services and reduced losses from hardware.
Totoki said he expected forthcoming titles to support the games business in the coming fiscal year.
The network was recently disrupted by a global outage.
