Qualcomm acquires AI platform Edge Impulse to boost Dragonwing chips
Briefly

Qualcomm has acquired Edge Impulse, an AI platform for developers, to strengthen its machine learning software capabilities especially for its Dragonwing chips. Edge Impulse, founded by Zach Shelby and Jan Jongboom, focuses on optimizing AI implementation on small devices such as sensors and microcontrollers. This acquisition allows Qualcomm to enhance critical operations across various sectors including retail and supply chain management, while Edge Impulse will continue to operate independently, keeping its offices and team intact. Edge Impulse has raised $54.3 million and serves over 170,000 developers.
Recognising that the compute capabilities of microcontrollers had grown to the point where they were able to run domain-specific AI models directly onboard, we realised there were an endless number of use cases that would benefit from moving AI from the cloud to the edge.
Our team and mission remain the same, only now, we will have even more opportunities and capabilities to accelerate what we do best.
