Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, has mandated that employees involved in artificial intelligence projects should work a minimum of 60 hours per week in-office. His memo, highlighting the importance of increased productivity for developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), was a response to fierce competition from companies like OpenAI and DeepSeek. Brin emphasized that some employees contribute insufficiently, negatively affecting morale in the workspace. Although this requirement does not pertain to all Google employees, it reflects the aggressive stance tech firms are taking to lead in AI advancements.
Brin expressed that the longer hours are essential for Google to win the race for artificial general intelligence, stating, "60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity."
Brin criticized some employees for not contributing enough: "This last group is not only unproductive but also can be highly demoralizing to everyone else."
