Cisco is expanding its engineering team, currently comprising 27,000 engineers, as it anticipates a strong demand for innovative solutions. Chief Product Officer Jeetu Patel emphasized the importance of AI tools like OpenAI's Codex, which automate repetitive tasks and change the dynamics of engineering work. While coding skills will remain relevant, Patel highlighted that skills in orchestrating agent workflows and understanding task suitability between humans and AI will be increasingly vital in engineering roles over the next five years.
Having a strong skillset in agent workflow and idea quality is "grossly underestimated," Patel said.
Patel said that AI automation tools, like OpenAI's Codex, are reshaping the role of engineers.
We feel more constrained now than ever before on not having enough engineers to get prosecuted all the ideas that we've got going internally.
Understanding the nuanced details of syntax in coding language will still be important, but there will be less emphasis on it in the future.
