Longshot Space, a small startup based in Oakland, California, is developing a novel projectile launcher designed to shoot satellites into orbit. Unlike traditional rockets, their system relies on pressurized gas to propel objects to extremely high speeds. Currently staffed by about 15 workers and expanding operations to the Nevada desert, the company envisions dramatically reducing launch costs and creating competition for established players like SpaceX. CEO Mike Grace is optimistic about achieving Mach 25 speeds with a tunnel-like launcher, signifying a new era in satellite deployment and hypersonic technology.
Despite the odds, things are going well enough that the company is expanding into the Nevada desert for larger, faster tests.
Grace thinks that if Longshot can fire satellites fast enough to reach orbit, the cost of launches will plummet - and Elon Musk will finally face a viable competitor to SpaceX.
