Rapidus, founded in 2022, is seeking ¥100 billion in additional funding from private investors due to its significant progress challenges in bringing 2nm chips to market.
The Japanese government has pledged ¥920 billion to support Rapidus's chip development efforts, with further aid considerations being dependent on the project's situation moving forward.
Despite being on track for volume production by 2027, pilot production for the 2nm chips at Rapidus's plant has been delayed to 2026 from an earlier target of 2025.
With major investors like Toyota and Sony involved, Rapidus aims to bolster Japan's semiconductor output, amid competitive global advancements in chip technology.
