In a recent episode of 'Last Week Tonight,' John Oliver scrutinized Facebook's shift away from professional fact-checkers towards community-driven content moderation. He highlighted the influence of political pressure on Mark Zuckerberg's decisions, specifically referencing Trump's past threats. Oliver argued that Facebook is gearing up to become a significant hub for misinformation and hatred. The episode featured an ad with Cecily Strong and Ronny Chieng, who humorously promoted Facebook's new strategy of not caring, encapsulated by the phrase 'f- it,' pointing out that their problems remain the same, now becoming a personal responsibility for users.
Trump threatened Mark Zuckerberg with life in prison, then Zuckerberg turned around, gave him money, hired one of his buddies, and changed the direction his company was going.
If Facebook is going to continue to subject us to a steadily rising tide of slurs, hoaxes and misinformation, the least it can do is tell us the actual truth in its messaging.
To be clear, all our previous issues remain, but by strategically pivoting to 'f- it,' we found it's now more of a you problem.
Zuckerberg will insist these changes are not a result of being under political pressure, but either way, Facebook sure seems now set to become an absolute sewer of hatred and misinformation.
