Digital communication in Middle East cultural institutions: developing a theoretical framework for the use of digital platforms - Humanities and Social Sciences Communications
Briefly

"This study investigates the role of digital platforms in preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the Middle East, focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR)."
"An analysis of 10 cultural institution's social media activity (January-December 2024) reveals that information-based strategies dominate and limit participatory engagement."
Digital platforms in the Middle East integrate artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) to support cultural heritage preservation and promotion. Social media activity from ten cultural institutions during January–December 2024 was analyzed for platform strategies and audience engagement. Information-based strategies were predominant across platforms. Dominance of informational content corresponded with limited participatory engagement and fewer interactive experiences. Limited use of participatory features reduced opportunities for community contribution, co-creation, and immersive education. Targeted strategies, capacity building, and policy support enable more participatory and sustainable digital heritage initiatives.
