The University of North Carolina (UNC) system recently announced that its institutions can no longer require students to take courses related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), a decision reflecting a significant shift in policy. This change aligns with directives from the Biden administration intending to stop funding activities related to DEI, coming in the wake of Donald Trump's executive order on merit-based opportunities. The UNC system's general counsel cited compliance concerns, stating that noncompliance could jeopardize the university's substantial federal funding, despite lacking clarity on what constitutes DEI.
Early this month, the University of North Carolina system told its component institutions that their general education requirements could no longer mandate that students take courses 'related to diversity, equity and inclusion.'
