Veronica Cardenas, the daughter of South American immigrants, initially worked as a prosecutor for ICE, driven by her prestigious career and minority status. However, after experiencing a disheartening shift in her work environment, especially regarding the treatment of minors and the humane enforcement of immigration laws, she found it increasingly difficult to reconcile her values with her job. Despite the challenges of providing for her family during a difficult divorce, Cardenas chose to resign in 2023. She now runs a private practice where she defends individuals facing immigration removal, striving for a more compassionate approach in the legal realm.
