"We weren't competitive. [Newcastle] outdid us physically,"
"We had a good amount of the ball and did pretty well with it. But the biggest difference was how quickly they broke every time we risked the ball. They got onto our backline too quick and caused us problems we couldn't solve. We're not at Newcastle's level. They would have had to probably have an off night, and we'd have probably had a really good night to get a result."
"I thought we were competitive with the ball, but it doesn't count for anything if you can't defend corners, can't score, and give away easy goals."
Newcastle opened the scoring within 55 seconds through Malick Thiaw, Lewis Miley doubled the lead in the 25th minute, and Nick Woltemade added a third on the stroke of half-time. Thiaw scored again just before the hour to put the visitors firmly ahead, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored a late consolation for Everton. Everton recovered possession at times but were outmuscled and repeatedly punished by quick Newcastle breaks, poor goals conceded and ineffective defending from set pieces. The home side conceded four at Goodison Park for the first time since April 2023, and the defeat highlighted clear tactical and physical shortcomings.
