Newcastle are in the market for players who can level up their midfield after a difficult start to the 2025/26 campaign. The Magpies have performed well in Europe but in the Premier League fallen short of expectations. Eddie Howe's side sit 14th in the table, just two points above the drop zone, having lost back-to-back fixtures against West Ham United and Brentford in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the season, and Everton have not been able to agree on a new deal with him yet. According to Football Insider, Newcastle are scouting the player regularly and they are hoping to sign him on a bargain. It will be interesting to see if they decide to sign him for a nominal amount of money in January.
We don't think it is a serious injury but we are getting him scanned and waiting on the result. I think there is every chance he might miss our game on Sunday but we will give him every opportunity to be fit. I feel relaxed about him being with England. It will all be done with England's blessing in terms of whether he is fit or not fit. We will work together to find the best solutions for Anthony.
Newcastle United signed Vakhtang Salia from Dinamo Tbilisi during the summer transfer window. The 18-year-old attacker is highly rated at the club, but he has yet to feature for the Premier League club because of injury problems. He will be hoping to return to action quickly and establish himself as a first-team player for the club. He is a long-term investment for Newcastle, and they will hope to nurture him into an important player.
Newcastle will look to bounce back from Sunday's disappointing display at West Ham when they host Athletic Bilbao tonight. Eddie Howe's side were poor in East London as they continued their woes away from Tyneside but redemption could come against an Athletic side missing several key players, including both Williams brothers. Athletic have not won in La Liga since October 4 and went down 3-2 in the Basque derby to Real Sociedad at the weekend.
They need to sign quality players in order to compete with elite clubs. They have an ambitious project, and they have substantial resources as well. Having the right men in charge behind the scenes will help them maximise their resources. They have done well to win a trophy last season, and they secured Champions League qualification as well. They need to add more quality and depth through the squad if they truly want to fight for major trophies.
Some of Newcastle's problems have stemmed from only having one fit striker. Nick Woltemade has impressed since his summer move from Stuttgart, but he has been solely relied upon in the number nine position, given that Yoane Wissa is yet to make his first appearance for his new club. Wissa picked up a knee injury on international duty soon after joining Newcastle, and that has kept him out until now.
Journalist Pete O'Rourke said: "I don't see them going out and signing Aghehowa in January. He's under contract at Porto until 2029 and there is a release clause of around £87million in that contract. Although, any club that's interested in Aghehowa will be hoping to probably sign him for less than that release clause as well."
