San Jose's Olivera Egg Ranch to close after 76 years
Briefly

The Olivera Egg Ranch, a family-run business in San Jose established in 1949, is set to close, marking the end of a legacy. Owner Ed Olivera Jr., reflecting on his many years at the ranch, notes significant changes over the decades, particularly in consumer behavior regarding Easter traditions. Once bustling with activity during the Easter season, the ranch will be demolished to make way for a new housing development. This closure symbolizes a broader shift in agricultural practices and consumer preferences, as highlighted by the reduced demand for real eggs during holidays.
I built these when I was a boy. That must've been about 66 years ago. It's changed an awful lot since then.
The holiday is like any other day now because everyone uses plastic eggs. Those eggs used to be real.
Easter is our busiest time, yes indeed. The chicken is a very, very efficient little critter.
This property will be razed for a 25-unit development of single-family houses, marking the end of a family-run business.
