The contract negotiations between the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 and the VTA have stagnated, with a looming deadline. The union, representing 1,500 employees, seeks a wage increase that reflects the region's living costs. Initial demands for an 8% raise have been reduced and still remain unaccepted. Employees are preparing for action if a deal isn’t reached, with a significant majority showing solidarity for a potential strike amidst dissatisfaction with VTA's offers and negotiation strategy.
"The negotiations have been very poor," ATU Local 265 President Raj Singh told San José Spotlight. The union, representing frontline VTA workers, is prepared for action.
Singh said while no strike is planned for Tuesday, the union is making preparations in case a deal is not reached before the contract's end.
