Kenji Yamamoto, once aspiring to be a painter, shifted his focus to filmmaking after a 25-year tenure at Apple. Partnering with his wife Nancy Kelly, he produced films and has now made his directorial debut with "The Dreamers and I," a documentary premiering at Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival. The film explores the Startup Embassy, a co-living space for entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. Faced with a long commute, Yamamoto connected with its vibrant community, drawing inspiration from their passion for innovation and resilience against challenges.
"I saw them as my inspiration," Yamamoto added. "They are artists who believe profoundly in their invention, in their idea, that whatever challenges that they face, they will still go forward and do it."
"The Dreamers and I" focuses on what its founder calls the Startup Embassy, one of the many "hacker houses" in Silicon Valley, full of people from around the world who dream of becoming the area's latest success story.
He had a 'day job' as video editor on contract with Apple for 25 years. Yamamoto was with the company when Steve Jobs announced the iPhone.
His solution led to his return to an artist's life. Now, he will make his directorial debut with the documentary "The Dreamers and I," which makes its world premiere Saturday, March 15, at San Jose's Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival.
