Shell puts Norway blue hydrogen plant on hold over lack of demand
Briefly

Shell's spokesperson stated, "We haven't seen the market for blue hydrogen materialize and decided not to progress the project... We have also chosen to put the Aukra-project on hold for the same reasons." This highlights the company's assessment regarding the lack of market demand for blue hydrogen, which has led them to suspend their planned hydrogen projects.
Shell's planned Aukra Hydrogen Hub was designed to produce 1,200 metric tons of hydrogen daily by 2030, expecting to avoid 4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. Nevertheless, the lack of sufficient market pull undercuts the project's viability.
Equinor's recent decision to abandon its blue hydrogen plans mirrors Shell's, which emphasizes a growing pattern among energy giants to pull back from hydrogen initiatives due to economic concerns and weak demand in the marketplace.
The shifting focus away from blue hydrogen projects underscores the challenges facing the hydrogen industry. Although it has been lauded as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, economic feasibility remains uncertain, thereby stalling major investments.
