NASA confirmed that a 'daylight fireball' had entered the atmosphere between 10 a.m. and noon and passed over the Statue of Liberty before 'disintegrating' 29 miles up in the air above Manhattan.
The agency said that the meteor had not been large enough to generate meteorites or endanger residents, as well as indicating that unrelated military testing outside of the city may have been responsible for some of the noises.
The city's Office of Emergency Management had reached out to area law enforcement departments to try to track the noise source down, but NASA had not initially contacted it.
