Loaded' water is hyped as a secret to hydration. But adding electrolytes is merely time down the drain | Antiviral
"Influencers are telling their followers they don't understand what hydration is if they're not adding electrolytes such as sodium and chloride (salt) as well as magnesium and potassium to their water to help their cells hold on to and use it. Often spruiking the sachets wellness companies are selling, they claim these fancy salt formulations are essential to avoid migraines and muscle cramps, anxiety and mood swings."
"Our bodies are mostly made of water, which can be found both inside and outside cells (including in our blood), and in the space between the two. Electrolytes play a biological role controlling the flow of where the water molecules get shifted in and out of cells within the body, explains associate professor Ricardo Costa, the director of research at Monash University's department of nutrition dietetics and food."
Younger people favour large reusable water bottles and trends such as "loaded water," where electrolyte sachets and decorative ingredients are added. Influencers claim added sodium, chloride, magnesium and potassium are essential to prevent migraines, cramps, anxiety and mood swings. Bodies contain water inside and outside cells and in the spaces between. Electrolytes influence the movement of water across cell membranes. Sodium intake does not substantially affect hydration status except at high consumption, which can retain blood water but raise blood pressure. Carbohydrates and proteins play a larger role than electrolytes in supporting hydration and fluid balance.
