""We were the first group to have demonstrated that you could have AI do the entire scientific process that underlies the creation of a paper," says study co-author Jeff Clune."
""I think it's a remarkable technological achievement," says Jevin West, which "really forces us to think about what science is." However, he warns of risks, including journals being flooded with papers of modest originality."
AI Scientist, developed by Sakana AI, automates the scientific process, including idea generation, testing, and writing. It is one of the first AI tools to undergo peer review, with a paper published in Nature. The tool submitted three original research papers to a machine-learning conference, with one accepted. Despite its achievements, co-founder David Ha notes that its output does not match the best human-produced papers. The automation of science raises concerns about originality and the potential inundation of journals with lesser-quality research.
