Lumen Orbit's recently closed $11 million seed round highlights a surge of investor interest in its innovative approach to building data centers in space, with a goal of developing multi-gigawatt compute clusters by the decade's end.
Johnston noted, 'Instead of paying $140 million for electricity, you can pay $10 million for a launch and solar,' showcasing Lumen's potential in dramatically lowering operational costs for data centers by leveraging space.
With NFX leading the seed funding, the company has ambitions to quickly increase its operational capabilities, planning to launch a demonstrator satellite equipped with Nvidia GPUs to test its technology.
Lumen Orbit aims to distinguish itself from traditional space startups by rapidly moving its projects forward, with Johnston stating, 'A lot of space companies take five years to launch; we are launching it in one.'
