Autonomous and premium human-driven rideshare vehicles including Waymo, Uber Black and Lyft Black can now operate on San Francisco's Market Street during certain hours. Market Street was closed to private cars beginning January 2020. Mayor Daniel Lurie approved Waymo in April and recently added Uber Black and Lyft Black to the permitted list. Streets Forward reports Muni is 14% faster and more reliable and roadway crashes and injuries on Market Street have decreased 40% since the car-free period began. Business groups and some merchants support the change, while traffic and pedestrian safety advocates warn of increased risks.
"Muni has become 14% faster and more reliable, and the number of roadway crashes and injuries on Market Street has decreased 40% since the since this part of Market Street was made exclusively, exclusive for people walking, biking and taking public transportation," said Luke Bornheimer with Streets Forward.
"I think it's a good thing. They can recognize my business more. They can get dropped off here," said My Huynh, Cafe Dolci owner told ABC7's Suzanne Phan last week.
