"I deeply regret voting to support the middle bike lane," said former SFMTA director and Valencia merchants representative Manny Yekutiel, who addressed the board during public comment. He reflected on his initial support for the lane but recognized the growing consensus that it failed to meet safety and usability standards, leading to the decision to replace it.
"I'm happy and proud to see SFMTA proposing to replace the center bikeway with curbside bikeways today," said Luke Bornheimer of StreetsForward, a long-time opponent of the center-running bike lane. He emphasized that the new design represents public safety concerns while preserving bike access, which he believes is critical for urban mobility.
"There are safety issues with the center-running lane that have not improved in the pilot period," said Claire Amable, director of advocacy with the Bicycle Coalition. She pointed out that, although the curbside lanes may be narrower, they conform to standard designs that are generally recognized as safer for cyclists, leading to better outcomes.
