Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris introduced A.B. 366, the Save Lives with Every Start bill, with support from safety advocates. This legislation requires individuals convicted of drunk driving to pass a breathalyzer or ignition interlock device (IID) test to start their vehicles, addressing California's high rates of drunk driving incidents. With eight out of the ten cities with the highest drunk driving rates in the U.S. located in California, the bill seeks to strengthen existing laws that are set to expire. Senator Bob Archuleta, who co-authored the bill, shared a personal loss to highlight the urgency of traffic safety.
This is an urgent call to action. This bill we're introducing today is a chance to save lives.
Lives are taken across the nation every single day. My own granddaughter was killed by a drunk driver over the holidays.
