Advocates are enthusiastic about the transformation of the Upper Great Highway into a beachfront park, set to close to cars definitively on April 12. Friends of Ocean Beach Park anticipates the park's opening with amenities like seating, recreation areas, public art, and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists. Planned features include murals, lounges, a nature exploration area for children, and more. The San Francisco Rec & Park department is also organizing a naming contest for the park.
"We're excited that San Francisco's newest park will open in just six weeks, transforming oceanfront space into a vibrant and accessible public asset."
"Over the following weeks, we'll be working closely with SFMTA, SFPUC, and Rec & Park on major traffic and safety improvements at the Great Highway's intersections, making it easier to access the park by foot, bike, and transit."
