The state Senate has passed HB 1204, a measure aimed at enforcing stricter rules against false campaign communication by including social media as a medium for disseminating such information. Sponsored by Sen. Sean Cleary, the amendment was inspired by past incidents where misleading information was spread through text messages and calls during elections. Cleary emphasizes the need for laws to evolve alongside changing election communication methods to maintain the integrity of elections and foster public trust in the electoral process.
As election communications evolve, I think our laws have to change with it. Unfortunately, we have seen our laws abused by bad actors in our state, who seek to interfere with our elections. Knowingly spreading falsehoods about an opponent undermines the integrity of elections.
These protect election integrity and uphold public trust.
