Dave Pasquino, a veteran of two Iraq tours, was terminated from his recently acquired HR role at the Department of Veterans Affairs just before achieving full-time status. Despite his commitment and successful contributions, including significant improvements in hiring processes, he received an email stating that his performance did not meet public interest requirements. Simultaneously, another employee, Ellen, was also let go from her position at the National Cancer Institute, reflecting concerns over job security for employees under probationary status and highlighting systemic issues within government employment practices.
Pasquino’s shock turned to anger as he discovered his termination was due to a performance evaluation that claimed his work was not in the public interest.
Despite having outstanding performance reviews, over 60 colleagues, including Pasquino, were unexpectedly let go from their positions at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Working for the government felt to Pasquino like a continuation of his service, but his experience at the VA turned into an abrupt termination.
The day Pasquino was terminated, Ellen was also let go from her position at the National Cancer Institute under probationary terms.
