Special educators in Silicon Valley are facing impending layoffs due to a significant decline in special education enrollment. A recent letter from interim superintendent Charles Hinman revealed that enrollment has dropped from 1,026 to 916 students, and may fall further to 796. This decline is attributed to school closures and substantial budget deficits affecting many districts in Santa Clara County. Despite staffing cuts, Hinman reassures that the quality and effectiveness of services for disabled students will remain intact as adjustments are made amidst financial challenges.
Special education enrollment throughout the county has declined from 1,026 students in 2024 to 916 year to date. Hinman's letter predicts it will further decrease to 796.
"While staffing adjustments are necessary due to declining enrollment and financial constraints, we remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining the quality of services and effectiveness of our special education programs," Hinman told San José Spotlight.
